David Garland is the Arthur T. Vanderbilt Professor of Law and Professor of Sociology at New York University and a Professorial Fellow at Edinburgh University School of Law. He is the author of several acclaimed books in the sociology of punishment, including The Welfare State: A Very Short Introduction (2016).
